Got too comfortable
Let me preface this by stating the truth - I love Oakland. I am so grateful for my neighbors, the local businesses, and the community. Not everything is peaches and cream but I've never felt unsafe here until yesterday. We caught a viewing at The New Parkway off of Telegraph and decided to walk home as we live not even 10 minutes away from the venue.
An idiot, for lack of a more demeaning word, began following us moments after leaving the movies. Once we caught wind of what was happening, we began to run. He sprinted behind trying to catch up. We ran a few blocks down 27th with him chasing us down until, by a total strike of luck, a cop car passed by and they had turned their sirens on just as we started waving them down.
The cop car did not stop to check on us, it seems like the sirens were unrelated to us waving them down. Thankfully, it was sufficient for the idiot to cross and turn around.
My intent with this post is not to cause fear mongering but to alert anyone that is as comfortable with Oakland as I was prior to yesterday. Hopefully, someone is able to learn from my experience so that they don't find themselves in a similar situation because they might not be as lucky as I was.
