It’s been 8 months of increasing behaviors. Time for our 2yo to start behavioral therapy?
Here goes, bracing myself for the responses…
Our daughter is turning 2 tomorrow(!) and has continued to be aggressive at times towards her 3yo female cousin- this behavior, such as hitting and biting-attempts (2 of which were successful) has actually increased if anything. Such behaviors “only” have happened in scenarios when the cousin is trying to take a desirable object from my daughter, or when my daughter is extremely excited (i.e she’s laughing hard with us, and then clutches daddy’s leg and bites it once). What’s sad is that my daughter loves her cousin, and when these behaviors aren’t happening, they’re really sweet together. It also doesn’t help that we have a now-two month old baby, but my daughter’s actually been amazing with her new birth so I don’t think this is a huge factor for the behaviors,
Two weeks ago, we got a call from her daycare that she’d bitten another child (they were apparently trying to take a toy from my daughter, and after she kept saying “no”, she finally bit them). I was so upset and immediately asked the pediatrician for a referral to a BCBA (we have tried have tried everything from ignoring to redirecting to positive/negative reinforcements to modeling appropriate responses, and I just feel like we’re not doing enough, I want to stay ahead of this). But the pediatrician hugely disagreed/was adamant that my daughter does not need this, saying to “just stay consistent with what you’re doing, she does NOT have ADHD, she does NOT have autism, she’s not even TWO”…but then tonight, after the cousin tried to grab a toy from my daughter, my daughter threw the toy in her frustration, and this toy sadly hit her cousin right on the head. This time, cousin’s mom was (100% understandably) really upset.
I feel so, SO terrible and sick, and mortified and defeated. We have been working on these issues since last August 2025, and I feel like it’s only escalated.
Please talk me off the ledge here. Anyone else go through this, did things eventually get better?
