Brooklynite in Raleigh...where is everyone?

Just got into Raleigh and was looking for a place to get dinner. Most places are closed by 8:30-9. The city is beautiful with so many restaurants, people, walkable streets but there doesn't seem to be anyone out and everything's closed. What's the deal?

Also, we are considering moving to NC and checking out Raleigh, Garner, Cary. Any transplants can offer some advice, suggestions, considerations for a family with 2 young kids?
