A senior Iranian official responded to US President Donald Trump’s latest ultimatum, stating that the Strait of Hormuz will only “reopen” once financial damages from the conflict are “fully compensated.”

Mehdi Tabatabaei, deputy for communications at Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s office, accused Trump of resorting to profanity “out of sheer desperation and rage” and warned that the US leader is fueling “an all-out war in the region.”

This comes as Trump set a clear deadline, demanding that Iran reopen the strait by Tuesday, writing on Truth Social: “Tuesday, 8:00 P.M. Eastern Time!,” corresponding to 3:30 a.m. in Tehran on Wednesday (00:00 GMT) as the ultimatum nears its expiry.

Tabatabaei posted on X, “The Strait of Hormuz will reopen only when, under a new legal regime, the damages from the imposed war are fully compensated from a portion of the transit toll revenues.” Iranian authorities have previously indicated they will continue charging fees for safe passage of some tankers through the strait, a move that has faced criticism from governments and shipping experts.

The Iranian mission to the United Nations also condemned Trump’s message, calling it an “open threat to destroy infrastructure essential to civilian survival in Iran.” The mission urged the international community to act, saying, “The international community and all States have legal obligations to prevent such atrocious acts of war crimes. They must act now. Tomorrow is too late.”

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Trump warned, “If they don’t do something by Tuesday evening, they won’t have any power plants and they won’t have any bridges standing,” signaling potential strikes on Iran’s civil infrastructure if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.
