Couple questions regarding modifiers

If I played with someone who was hosting a 4 star run, and I only have access to the 1 star and 2 star modifiers, would I be able to get the 2, 3 and 4 star badges? And is it possible to gain access to modifiers if you don’t have any wins, BUT you play with someone hosting a 1-4 star run and beat it?
