EXPLORING THE GENERAL EDUCATION TEACHER’S PERCEPTION OF MEETING THE NEEDS OF STUDENTS IDENTIFIED WITH EMOTIONAL DISTURBANCES AND LEARNING DISABILITIES FROM A PHENOMENOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE
- Are you a current general education teacher?
- Do you currently work with students with emotional disturbances and specific learning disabilities?
If you answered yes to both of the questions listed above, you may be eligible to participate in a research study.
The purpose of the study is to understand the lived experiences of 12 general education teachers of students identified with emotional disturbances and learning disabilities in the K-12 inclusive setting. The study will focus on the lived experiences of general education teachers of students identified with emotional disturbances and specific learning disabilities and their preparation for meeting the needs of this group of students.
Participants will be asked to do the following:
- Participate in a virtual, audio and video-recorded interview that will take no more than 20-30 minutes.
- Submit two, 20-30 minute video-recorded lesson observations that display your interactions with students with emotional disturbances and specific learning disabilities. The observations will come from two separate dates.
- A one-time document submission will include general education teacher input forms collected by the special education case carrier before the IEP is developed and implemented, to understand the teacher’s academic perspective on the student. Observations recorded in the AeQuitas Student Information System, along with referrals to special education and administration, will be analyzed to capture the teacher’s behavioral perspective.
- Member checking will take place in order to ensure the validity of the data that is collected from the interviews and video observations.
- Names and other identifying information will be collected as part of this study, but participant identities will not be disclosed.
- A consent document is provided below..
- Amber Cooper, a doctoral candidate in the School of Education Department at Liberty University, is conducting this study.
