Why most Filipinos stay broke despite working hard — and it's not laziness
Hard truth incoming.
Most Filipinos work incredibly hard. And still struggle financially. Here's why — and it's systemic, not personal.
1. We were never taught money in school Not one subject on budgeting, investing, or compound interest. We learned trigonometry but not how a credit card actually works.
2. The culture rewards generosity over wealth-building Utang na loob. Family support expectations. Pakikisama. All beautiful values — that can financially drain you if unmanaged.
3. The banking system wasn't built for low-income earners Minimum maintaining balances, low interest rates, limited access outside Metro Manila.
4. Financial products are marketed confusingly VUL insurance sold as investment. Prenda shops as "emergency cash." Payday loans with hidden charges.
None of this makes you dumb. It makes you unequipped.
The solution starts with information. That's what this community is for.
What's one financial mistake you made because nobody taught you better?
