I'm a little worried about the fandom sometimes (stuff I've noticed)

Digital Discussion

Hello there everyone! I'm a long time lurker of this subreddit, I love seeing all the fanart and discussions that unfold! In light of this new episode, however, I think I've come to a realization about this fandom that makes me worried for some people's mental health.

So, TADC operates under a form of heightened reality, given the cartoonish nature of the setting our cast finds themselves in. In any form of heightened reality, actions and words are exaggerated to conjure the many emotions and themes that run through a narrative.

A good example of this is the slapstick in the show and how it scales with real world pain. Characters are squished, shot, thrown into hot oil, and are subjected to many forms of violence that could only ever be horrifying in the real world. The disconnect between real world pain and the trauma that comes from it and the violence in the show suggests that the simulated violence they experience does not effect them as deeply as it would otherwise. My interpretation is that this is to highlight the consequences of emotional harm rather than physical trauma.

Something I've noticed is how seriously some people take the physical aspect of the show. I've seen youtube videos that compare Jax in episode 6 to women in real life murdered with guns and it comes off as a little extreme? Like the seriousness that people take with the adventures and the slapstick seem comes off as a little melodramatic when it's clear that the slapstick is meant to be a stand-in for emotional concepts and not literal domestic violence, kidnapping, etc.?

Episode 8 was intense for sure! But I feel the extreme reactions some people had to it come off as them taking their own issues and personal traumas and "projecting" them onto the characters. As if everything shown is supposed to be taken as severely as it appears on the surface which feels a little like poor media literacy rather than real analysis. I feel this really muddies the waters of what this show is trying to convey in favor of a reductive, hyper-realistic, knee-jerk approach.

It's like calling a looney toons character an abuser for like, shooting someone out of a canon. You just seem really silly if you do that, right? To a limited extent that's how I feel when people try to paint any of the characters in the show as monstrous, irredeemable villains who're too dangerous to exist (Jax, Ragatha for some reason??? Caine, Pomni for shooting people???? What are you guys on fr????? Like Jax and Caine do really bad stuff but when you take the tone into account they're hardly unsalvageable. Still accountable but no past the point of no return. No one is, that's kinda one of the points the show is making? And saying the same for any of the women on the show makes you seem like a clown!!!!).

I get a lil worried because a lot of discussions around this stuff just seem to be people reliving their own trauma and not really engaging with the show on its level. I seriously hope you guys are doing okay?? And can learn to heal from whatever's hurt you so you can engage healthily and live a good life, that's all.

I hope this all makes sense, I'd love to hear what other people think!
