I asked 50 students how they study. 47 of them were doing the same useless thing.
So I got curious and started asking people in my classes how they actually study. Not what they think they do. What they ACTUALLY do when they sit down.
I talked to about 50 people over the last few weeks. Here's what almost all of them said:
"I re-read my notes" "I go through the slides again" "I highlight the important parts" "I watch youtube videos about it" "I make flashcards"
all passive. every single one. they're looking at information and hoping their brain absorbs it. thats not studying thats just reading with anxiety
only 3 people out of 50 said they close their notes and test themselves from memory. THREE. and guess what those 3 had in common. highest grades in the class. studying the fewest hours.
the other 47 are spending 3-5 hours a day doing stuff that feels productive but doesnt actually make their brain work. highlighting isnt studying. re-reading isnt studying. watching a video isnt studying. those are all just different ways of looking at information passively
studying is forcing your brain to retrieve information without help. thats it. thats the whole thing. close your notes try to explain it. whatever you cant explain is what you dont know. study that. repeat.
I built my entire method around this and went from a 2.9 to a 3.6. now I use learnzy to automate the process — upload a topic and it creates a lesson then quizzes you with actual recall questions so you cant fake knowing something. learnzy.io if you want to try it, first lessons are free.
but even without any tool. just close your notes and test yourself. you will immediately see the difference. the 47 people I talked to were shocked when I told them this. some of them literally said "but thats not studying." yes it is. its the ONLY thing that is.
