# Part 132: Sonic Vs. Flash

You know, it’s sometimes wild how Death Battle manages to take characters that, on the surface, feel like “yeah okay, they’re both fast,” and then just cranks it up to absolute insanity once you actually dig into what those versions can do. Because this episode isn’t just a matchup between two returning characters—it’s a shift in how the show approaches scaling entirely. We are finally covering specific versions of character. We’re not just doing Flash vs Sonic. We’re doing Wally West versus Archie Sonic. That alone already tells you: this is about to get stupidly broken.

We kick things off with Wally, and honestly, I’m just gonna call him Flash because, come on, we all know who we’re talking about. Right from the jump, they hit you with one of the most absurd feats imaginable—this man literally saved the DC multiverse by just… running. Like, no gimmicks, no special device, just “I’m fast enough to fix reality.” And yeah, Boomstick brings back the Flash Gordon joke again, but honestly, I don’t even mind it at this point. It’s one of those recurring bits that just works.

Then we get into Wally’s origin, and man, the fact that his powers come from basically the same freak accident as Barry Allen is still funny as hell. Like, lightning really said “copy-paste.” But once we get into what the Speed Force actually lets him do, it just spirals out of control in the best way possible. Phasing through objects, vibrating so fast he turns invisible, entering higher dimensions, stealing speed from others—it’s all here. And of course, they bring up the Infinite Mass Punch, which is basically getting hit with the weight of a star moving at incomprehensible speed. Casual.

And I love how even the analysis itself starts to break down trying to explain his feats. There’s literally a point where the visuals are just like “what the fuck” over and over, because that’s the only correct response. When you get to “he outran the Speed Force itself” and “his speed became immeasurable,” yeah… you stop asking questions. But what really saves this rundown from being just a wall of insanity is that they actually take a moment to talk about Wally as a character—his need to prove himself worthy of the Flash mantle, not just to others but to himself. That emotional grounding? That’s good shit.

Then we move over to Archie Sonic, and immediately they establish that this is not your standard game Sonic. This version comes from a world where things are way darker—like, Dr. Eggman straight up turning Sonic’s family into robots. That’s messed up. The Archie comics really don’t play around sometimes.

And just like with Flash, once they get into the feats, it becomes completely unhinged. Sonic can match light speed instantly, phase through objects, run through stopped time, and pull off feats that the comic itself just labels as “incalculable.” That’s when you know the writers just gave up trying to quantify it. Then you throw Chaos Energy into the mix, and everything gets even more ridiculous. Super Sonic is already busted, but Ultra Sonic? Now we’re talking about atomic-level matter manipulation. At that point, you’re not even a speedster anymore—you’re basically a walking reality hack.

But here’s where I do have an issue: unlike Flash’s rundown, Sonic’s character barely gets touched on. It’s almost entirely feats, feats, feats. And yeah, that fits the tone of the matchup, but come on—you showed you can balance it with Flash. You could’ve done the same here.

Now… the fight. God help me. It opens with both of them already going at insane speeds, racing across what looks like space or some multiversal highway, and the banter at the start is actually really fun. Nicholas Andrew Louie returns as Sonic and does a solid job, and Joshua Waters as Flash also delivers. The chili dog gag where Flash just steals it mid-race? That’s peak petty energy, I love it.

Visually, the sprites look great, and the effects really sell the scale… but I’m a bit mixed on the sense of speed. It’s definitely better than older speedster fights like Flash vs Quicksilver, but it still feels like it could’ve been pushed even further. Like, these are characters who break reality with speed, and sometimes it still feels a bit grounded.

That said, there are moments where it really clicks. When they’re reduced to just red and blue streaks clashing across the track, or when Flash just unloads what feels like a million punches in a split second—that’s the kind of insanity I wanted. Then Flash pulls one of his most broken moves and literally steals Sonic’s speed, and just as things look bad, Sonic pulls out a Super Emerald out of nowhere and goes Super Sonic. And yeah… from here on out, the fight just becomes complete chaos. They’re jumping through dimensions, ending up in this abstract multiverse of shapes and colors, and while it looks cool as hell, I’ll be honest—I got lost at points. I genuinely couldn’t tell how we got from one location to another sometimes.

Then Sonic goes Ultra Sonic… somehow. Which is confusing because the analysis made it seem like he needed a specific item for that, and I did NOT see that anywhere. But okay, we roll with it. Now he’s manipulating matter, turning the ground to ice, tripping Flash, blasting him around—it’s escalating fast.

There’s even a funny moment where Flash rolls around the planet while Sonic just waits for him to come back around. That kind of humor? Great. But then we hit one of my biggest issues: Sonic’s dialogue. There’s a line where he starts bragging about being superior in every way, and it just… doesn’t sound like Sonic. It sounds like a generic villain monologue, and it really took me out of it. Then things get even more confusing with Chaos Control, Flash calling on people from his past, and suddenly he’s building momentum again, literally igniting as he runs. It looks awesome, but explanation-wise? Yeah, good luck if you’re not already familiar with this stuff.

And then the finisher: Flash runs back in time to before Sonic powers up and lands an Infinite Mass Punch so hard that Sonic relives his entire life in an instant before getting completely obliterated. That is a badass kill, I’m not gonna lie. It’s creative, it fits the character, and it actually feels like a proper ending to something this insane.

The track, “Way Past Flash” by Brandon Yates, absolutely slaps. High-energy, guitar-heavy, and the inclusion of “Live and Learn” motifs? Yeah, that’s fanservice done right. And the way it ramps up during the final sequence makes that ending hit even harder.

I also really appreciate the conclusion here. They don’t pretend this was a stomp—they straight up say it was ridiculously close, like 51/49 close. And honestly, I buy that. With characters this broken, it really does come down to specific interpretations and edge cases.

So yeah… where do I land on this? I like this episode. I really do. The concept of using specific versions like Wally West and Archie Sonic is fantastic, and I hope they keep doing that. The analyses are mostly solid—Flash’s is great, Sonic’s could’ve been better. The fight looks amazing at times, with great effects and creative moments, but it also gets really confusing if you’re not already deep into both franchises. And the banter dropping off halfway through? That’s a missed opportunity, because the start proved how fun it could’ve been if they kept that energy. It’s one of those episodes where the highs are really high, but the lows—mainly clarity and characterization—hold it back just enough. Still, I can’t call this mid. The good outweighs the bad pretty clearly.
