Foreign Evaluation Woes [Niche (hopefully not so) problem]
Hey, looking for help from folks here to navigate the Foreign Evaluation process. Context, I am a BA LLB (5 year course) from India, did an LLM from a decent law school in US, and now hoping to sit for the NY Bar.
Few hiccups--at the time I did my LLM, I was not planning on the NY Bar and so I dont meet the 24 credit requirement (short by 1), and perhaps not even the required 6 credit for relevant bar subject courses.
I am anyway planning on submitting an application for evaluation, but I saw these two scenarios dealt with in the summary on the NYBE website. Was curious if there were folks here who have had to deal with this.
This is the quote from the website:
"If an applicant did not successfully complete 24 semester hours of credit during their LL.M. degree, in compliance with Court of Appeals Rule 520.6(b)(3)(i), the applicant may either petition the Court for a waiver of strict compliance under Rule 520.14, or the applicant may cure the deficiency by taking the missing credits on a non-degree basis at an ABA-approved law school in the United States. For example, if an applicant only took 22 credits in their LL.M. program because they did not initially plan on taking the New York bar exam, or the applicant took 24 credits but one or more credits were disqualified by the Board of Law Examiners, the applicant may take the additional credits on a non-degree basis at an ABA-approved law school in the United States without having to petition the Court for a waiver."
Anyone heard of non-degree basis credits program being offered? Also, has anyone attempted applying for a waiver.
I know this seems to be a very peculiar situation, but I am sure there is someone up on here who had to navigate this!! Thanks for your help (in advance)!!
