Need advice on lenses for portrait, walk around, and macro. Canon R10
I am looking for lens upgrade advice. Here is my current gear
Camera: Canon R10, I have a Rebel XS as well
Lenses:
- EF 50mm f/1.8 II
- EFS 55-250mm IS (it says MACRO 1.1m/3.6ft I think that makes it .31x)
- EFS 18-55mm (says .25m so I assume .25x macro)
Other Gear:
- EF-EOS R Control Ring Adapter
- Canon Speedlite 430EXII flash
- Godox transmitter and receiver
- cheap stands and diffusers that seem to do the job.
Complaints:
- The autofocus on these lenses, especially the 50mm is pretty loud and slow. I gather even cheap newer stuff is better.
- I can get pretty good photos out of the 50mm but wanna get some wider options
Stuff I Shoot
- Cats (Current lenses focus slowly and they can hear the motors whirring)
- Portraits - mostly stuff like Halloween costumes with my wife. Space in the house makes just enough room for 50mm or the 55-250mm for head shots.
- Want to try macro - Flowers. Wife is getting back into clay art and we wanna setup little scenes
- Birds and Squirrels - considering an RF100-400 in the future, right now the 55-250mm is good enough to practice.
- Starting to take photography classes and exploring different stuff.
Budget:
Lets say $2000, but I can spend more if it makes sense.
Lenses I am considering:
General Purpose / Portrait
- Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary (RF mount)
- Only concern is that it doesn't have IS, but I realized my 50mm doesn't either.
- I gather this is a pretty big bang for your buck
- Open to other ideas, like a better single lens or multiple options
Macro
- Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro (the one with the built in light)
- Haven't messed with macro at all yet, but this is 1:1 seems like a good deal used.
- I know people point out some 100mm lens options for macro instead, but I'm not sure if I will get into shooting spookable things like little bugs and stuff.
- Is this what I would want to do close ups of flowers, cats eye, little clay miniatures?
- (maybe) Canon RF85mm f/2 Macro IS STM
- Anything else to consider? Not sure I want a really expensive lens when I haven't done macro before.
Question:
Are there other lens options anyone thinks I should consider? I assumed save money getting the 35mm, but wasn't sure if I should practice with my existing lenses before deciding to jump to 1:1. Also not sure if I should consider either splurging on a nice RF lens or an older pro level EF lens?
