Layoff & Short Term Disability

Employment Law

Location: Michigan, United States

My company announced a 15% headcount reduction that will begin taking place soon. I suspect more likely than not that I'll be included in that 15%.

Here's my dilemma: I need a hysterectomy. What happens to my disability insurance if I'm given a termination while on leave?

I know being on leave doesn't delay or prevent a termination- I'm trying to do the math on calculating how severance, short term disability insurance, and unemployment insurance will play together financially. Will I continue to get short term disability pay beyond my termination date if my leave started before my termination notification, or does it end at my term date? I need this to calculate the cost risks of a couple different choices.

I'm betting on being able to pivot into another role elsewhere, albeit with about a 20k paycut and not-as-good health insurance, fairly soon. Debating whether I should suck it up and work at full pay rate at my current job as long as possible and then do the hysterectomy in a year or so once I qualify for short term disability coverage, or if I do it now while I have excellent health insurance with no deductible and larger base wage for disability calculations.
