so i just finished wintermute in The Long Dark and it was really good. but now i started survival mode and it feels like a completely different game.

in story mode, even though it is survival, you kind of know what you need. like if you need food or meds or something, the game sort of gives you a way to get it. so you are always moving with some direction.

but in survival mode, everything feels random. like you dont know where things are, and whatever you find feels limited. so im a bit confused on how to think about it long term.

like for example,

food — canned food and stuff will obviously run out at some point. so what do you guys actually depend on later? is it mostly hunting and fishing?

and same with firewood, like is it limited? or is there a way to keep getting it over time?

also about location, do you guys just stay in one region and build a base there, or keep moving around? because if things run out, staying in one place feels risky.

and starting region also, is there a place that is generally better to start, or does it not matter much?

i think the main thing im struggling with is the mindset. in story mode it feels structured, but here it feels like you have to figure out your own system.

so yeah, just wanted to hear how you guys approach your runs and what changed for you when you moved to survival.
