Problems with SS card appointment.

I'm not sure where to ask this so bear with me. I just arrived in the U.S. with my child and i'm trying to get a social security number for her. I've called the national number and it appears no longer possible to speak to an actual person. I tried the application online but there are items i'm sure about to answer. Does anyone have any idea what else can be done? Thank you for the help.
