Thoughts on item Potentials in Classic, but actually making it fun/healthy/rare?
Hear me out first.
The original Potential system was a power-creep disaster, but I think a healthier 'Potential' system could provide the depth MS Classic needs. Instead of stat-stacking like with the live game, shifting toward unique modifiers and meaningful trade-offs to enable diverse playstyles.
Rather than chasing percentages, items should offer build-defining "Potential" traits. For example;
- Damage Conversion: e.g., Convert 100% of Physical damage into Fire damage
- Slot Trade-offs: e.g., Lose the ability to wear a Hat, but increase Overall stats by 50%
- Playstyle Shifts:
- Reduce direct damage to zero, but increase Damage-over-Time by 100%
- Your knockback effects are tripled, but knockback effects on you are doubled
MS Classic is no longer "pure", people need to give that up. As is the case, increasing build and item depth in a healthy way is good for the longevity of the game. Build diversity is important and keeps the game fresh and fun, and lets you invent your own playstyle
