PSA For UPS Buyers With High Wattage Devices and 16A Plugs
Backstory
I would like to start this post by saying that i am not affiliated or sponsored by any company or product that i am sharing
I would just like to inform folks on a problem that i faced along with many others on this subreddit and found myself a solution that i can vouch for
Search Process
I spent close to 2 years looking for a UPS to power my machine
My requirements were simple
- 16A Plug output/IEC C19 Plug
- Capability to power an average load of ~1300W for a PSU that was rated for -1500W
I was willing to import this item and willing to pay any price
I spent countless hours talking to foreign companies like tripplite and could not find any solution; i even contacted APC and requested a custom solution that they could fulfill
Problems faced
Many users suggested to simply replace the cable with an indian 6A cable and the problem then became that the other end of the cable was a C13 instead of a C19 which would not work
With a higher wattage PSU
Many users buy a 750W or an 850W PSU and this solution would work fine
But for users with 5090s and other high powered GPUs
Especially those that they overclock and can reach TDP of upto 1000W
This would simply not work
Others suggested cutting the plug and installing a local plug and to be honest i doubt the capabilities of local electricians especially for a PC that is worth 7Lakh+ INR
On top, the cable that ships with a 6A plug is usually rated for a maximum of 6A that is ~1320W for India and a 1300W power draw is running the cable at its maximum making it more susceptible to failure due to heat and potentially a fire hazard
I wanted to use the stock cable that was provided by the PSU manufacturer
No UPS i could find had C19 or a 16A plug and the C19 units i could find
- Were imported and only had 110V instead of 220V making them redundant
- Indian makes were commercial grade with 5KVa or higher capacity which is far higher than what common household wiring is capable for requiring complete redoing of wiring through the walls
Solution
Eventually i was helped by a fellow redditor within this subreddit to come to a conclusion
They informed me of their setup which was similar to mine and had a similar power draw
They informed me of a UPS they have tested and how they used it
UPS Used
CyberPower OLS2000EC
Purchased from PCStudio; its also available on amazon
Now the UPS only has 6A Output plugs but can output upto 1600W total with no limitation of the plug
Now i learnt that the cable that is used is important not the plug itself
If the cable is rated for a higher wattage, the plug does not make a difference
Because a lower wattage cable can heat up and run at its maximum capacity leading to a higher failure rate
But a 6A plug with a cable that is rated high would circumvent this
So the cutting and replacing the plug solution would work; but i did not want to risk incompetence and failure due to user error and mess up my OEM cable in the process
So i ordered a 16A to 6A power strip
Now this is not any ordinary no name convertor since many times they are of poor build quality and often run 6A cables instead of higher wattage cables
I ordered the MXPowerstrip 16A to 6A cable
I ordered the 1800W 16A/6A MCB switch model with a 1.5m cable
Amazon link - https://www.amazon.in/dp/B0BSGRXBKF
Now at first i was skeptical since i do not trust these convertors one bit
But after receiving the delivery, i checked the cable and was alleviated of the stress after looking at the thick cable that has good build quality and was rated for high wattage
Now i noticed that a user on amazon gave it a bad review and checked what it was
Their plug melted within this power strip
And when i was initially setting this up; i realized that the plug is kind of tight and you have to use a lot of force/pressure to ensure a good fit
I believe the user did not fully seat the plug leading to the plug melting due a high contact point instead of steady dispersal
So if you buy the same
Ensure that the plug is FULLY seated from all sides before powering on your machine
My setup
Wall A/C Power -> CyberPower UPS -> 6A Powerstrip Cable -> 16A PSU Cable -> PSU
Now i have tested this myself for 3 months now and can now say with absolutely certainty that this item/combo works well
I maintain a steady ~1300W load for 12 hours non stop and this solution has worked very well for me
The UPS is able to give me enough time to shut down if required but usually power is only gone for <1 minute in my area usually 3-4 times a day
Which previously would abruptly shut down my machine
This gives me time to reduce load to increase duration
Or shut down if power does not return in time
Highly recommended combo
Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have
But i cannot express how grateful i am to the fellow redditor for putting me onto this and i am sharing this full story so it can hopefully save someone else the headache and effort that i had to go through
