Does this fjord road trip itinerary make sense?
Hey all, planning a road trip through the fjords with a small group (4-5 people including my mom, so no crazy multi-day hikes) in late June, so hopefully long days and decent weather.
The rough plan:
Day 1 (Mon) — Fly into Bergen, pick up rental car, drive straight to the Hardangerfjord area (Lofthus/Ulvik). Don't plan to spend time in Bergen itself.
Day 2 (Tue) — Explore Hardangerfjord. Thinking cider farms, Vøringsfossen, maybe a boat trip from Eidfjord or the Kinso River walk. Relaxed day.
Day 3 (Wed) — Drive north over Aurlandsfjellet (heard it's incredible if it's open) and continue to Loen/Stryn area. Loen Skylift in the afternoon if the weather cooperates. Skip Flåm entirely.
Day 4 (Thu) — Morning around Nordfjord, maybe Briksdalsbreen approach. Then drive to Hjørundfjord. Afternoon in Norangsdalen / Lygnstøylvatnet. Stay in Øye or Sæbø.
Day 5 (Fri) — Full day in Hjørundfjord. Ferry, maybe kayaking, Christian Gaard, short hikes. This is meant to be the highlight.
Day 6 (Sat) — Drive to Ålesund, explore the town, Aksla viewpoint, maybe Alnes lighthouse.
Day 7 (Sun) — Fly out of Ålesund.
Some questions:
- Is Aurlandsfjellet usually open by late June or is that still risky?
- Any accommodation recommendations along the route?
- Are we trying to fit too much in?
Thanks a lot in advance.
