How does wind blow in big strong gusts then nothing for some time?

Happens a lot around our area. The wind can blow in big gusts over 30-40 km/hr sometimes more. Then there is a calm for a couple minutes or more then another huge gust. How does this happen, what airline mechanism is not just constant striping wind?
