Guangzhou: Come for the food, stay for... well, just the food. (5-day honest review)
"Just wrapped up 5 days in GZ. Honestly? If you're a foodie, it's paradise; if you're looking for ""sights,"" it's a bit of a mixed bag. Here’s the breakdown.
The Wins:
The Food is legit. Don't even bother with fancy restaurants, just hit the dim sum spots and street stalls. 15 RMB for a beef ho fun that's better than anything I’ve had back home. The ""freshness"" (Xian) is real—even the chicken feet were a highlight.
Transport is a breeze. Metro is top-tier, and Didi (their Uber) is cheap and reliable.
Emergency Dental Save. Randomly got a gum infection mid-trip. Ended up at Vickong Dental. Got an appointment in 2 hours, paid 380 RMB for a cleaning/meds, and the staff actually spoke English. Huge relief since I was ready to just suffer through it.
The Reality Check (The Cons):
The Humidity & Roaches. April in GZ is basically living in a wet towel. And the roaches... I saw two in my Airbnb that were the size of small birds. I’m still traumatized.
The Language Wall. Tried asking for directions in English/broken Mandarin and got waved off multiple times. Cantonese is king here, and if you don't speak it, some locals (especially drivers) can be pretty dismissive.
Underwhelming ""Sights."" Beijing Road and Shamian Island are okay for a 15-minute stroll, but don't expect the historical depth of Xi'an or the charm of Suzhou. It feels very ""malls and modern concrete.""
The Smog. The Pearl River view was a grey blur for 40% of my trip.
Bottom line: 2-3 days is plenty to eat your way through the city. Any longer and the humidity/grey skies might start to get to you."
