How many sad past is too much...

hi hi, this is kinda too late to ask but for a non-tragedy , non-grimdark , anime style story, how much "tragic past" character is too much in your opinion. Forget anime, just in general I guess. how many can you tolerate before it feels kinda too edgy? or does it depend on pacing? the world building?

I kinda setup too many characters with tragic past in the beginning and only now trying to design more light-hearted characters moving forward, but a lot of the earlier characters are pretty much set in stone already.
