We shipped 45 free tools and deliberately didn't ask for a single email. Still not sure if that was smart?

Feedback

We build a social media scheduling tool for agencies and founders. A few months ago, we added 45 free tools on the side. Caption generators, hashtag tools, engagement calculators, and ROI trackers.

Stuff people normally bounce between three tabs to get done.

The decision that got internal pushback: no email gate. No signup. Just open it and use it.

Everyone knows the playbook. Gate it. Build the list. Free tools are a lead gen opportunity. We chose not to.

Our thinking was simple. Someone landing on a free tool needs something right now. A form in the way doesn't start a relationship, it just annoys them.

Let them use it, let it work well, trust builds on its own. That felt like a better long-term bet.

We also didn't drip-feed them. Shipped all 45 at once instead of one a week to look busy.

Still genuinely unsure if we left something on the table or made the right call.

For anyone who's faced this decision with free tools or free content, did you gate it? Would you do it differently now?
