I don't understand Verso

Why does he love this shitty family so much? Renoir destroyed his home, Clea hates him and killed all his friends from first expedition. The Paintress made him to be her emotional support son without caring about his feelings too much. Then she cursed him with immortality. Yet he loves her that much he's ready to kill himself for her. Yes, I believe Verso's feelings are sincere because he was genuinely heartbroken when she was her dying irl. Even though she gave him zero reasons to care for her really he got nothing but pain from all of them. On the other hand, Sciel and Lune did care for Verso and didn't treat him as replacement. I won't say anything about Maelle because her relationship with Verso is indeed unhealthy due to their traumatic background but the rest of E33 didn't know real Verso and saw painted one as his own person. Verso also grew to love them but when it was time to make the choice he still chose his shitty mother. What's bro's problem? In theory Maelle's ending should be a happy ending for him because he doesn't live in isolation anymore, can play music, eat good food and sleep in proper bed, he has all his favourite people around him and the war is over. But no. For some reason he continues to suffer. Tbh this drama feels forced. As if game creators tried to make shitty depressing endings that will make players feel bad on purpose and it was their main goal. Everything else came second.
