Am I the only one thinks that "unneccesary" crimes as John doesn't really make sense

In RDR1, John wants to get his family back from the Pinkertons and live a normal life with Abigail, so I doubt he'd risk all that robbing and killing random people if it doesn't help him get them back (he also hates himself for his past life) etc.

In RDR2, I think this makes even less sense, because he's just started trying to live a normal life and is motivated to do so after Abigail leaves, and even more so after she returns.

As Arthur it makes a lot of sense all the way until he decides to be good
