Too Many Coincidences with the Letters
I’ve been rewatching the series after a long time, and the further I get, the more the incredibly artificial and implausible way JT’s letters constantly end up in the wrong hands through absurd coincidences starts to irritate me. Instead of building tension organically, it often feels like the writers are desperately forcing drama, no matter how illogical the path to get there is.
In Season 1, Gemma finds the letters while cleaning up Jax’s garage. Okay, that’s still somewhat believable. But later on, it becomes increasingly ridiculous. Jax’s stepmother slips additional letters into Jax’s bag. Tara then happens to find the letters and keeps them from Jax. Her son Abel starts scribbling on one of the letters because he gets into Tara’s bag where the letters are. By sheer coincidence, Gemma discovers exactly that scribbled-on letter. Gemma then informs Clay and Unser about the letters and where they might be hidden.
Unser finds the letters in Tara’s office, sits down with them in front of his trailer, and at that exact moment Clay shows up. Unser panics and tries to burn the letters. Clay leaves, and immediately afterward Gemma appears and instantly notices that they must be copies.
These stacked coincidences feel completely contrived and pull you right out of the immersion.
Another example: When Jax and Tara get married and need an important document for it, the show once again chooses the most implausible solution possible. The lawyer, supposedly pressed for time, doesn’t give the document to Jax or Tara — but of all people hands it to Gemma, who then of course gets access to information that wasn’t meant for her. Dramatically predictable, logically questionable. In my opinion, just bad writing.
Overall, this creates the strong impression that conflicts don’t develop naturally, but are artificially constructed through exaggerated coincidences — and that noticeably harms the otherwise strong world-building, atmosphere, and character development.
Does anyone else feel the same way, or am I the only one who gets this frustrated with all these forced letter coincidences?
