The donate button placement on your website is probably costing you donors and most nonprofits never figure this out
Worked with a mid-sized nonprofit a few years back. Solid mission, decent website traffic, but online donations were embarrassingly low. First thing I checked was their donate button placement. It was buried in the footer.
Moved it to the top right of the navigation bar. Donations went up within the first month. No other changes.
That experience taught me to always audit the donate button before anything else when an org comes to me with low online revenue. Here is what I've consistently found works across multiple organizations over the years:
Top right navigation placement outperforms everything else. Donors are trained to look there. Don't fight that instinct.
Color contrast is not a design opinion, it is a conversion factor. Your donate button should stand out from every other element on the page. If a first-time visitor has to hunt for it even for two seconds, you have already lost some of them.
One donate button is rarely enough. Homepage, about page, program pages, blog posts. Every page where someone might feel inspired to give should have a clear path to donate.
The button copy matters more than most orgs think. Donate Now outperforms Donate almost every time. Give Today works well for certain audiences. Generic words like Contribute tend to underperform.
Have you tested your donate button placement or copy recently? What results did you see? Would love to hear what has worked or not worked for others here.
