Apartment searching

What’s the best way to find an apartment in Rhode Island? I’m noticing lots of scams, been on Facebook and Zillow, apartments.com. I’m looking for a 1-2 bedroom place for my boyfriend and I that is cat friendly and under 1400 a month if anyone has any suggestions please let me know!
