Have the tapes been played on mono or stereo machines?

Does anyone know if the tapes were played on mono vcr’s or stereo? With a vhs tape there are 2 ways of recording the audio. The stereo will be digitally encoded and the mono is analog. If it was played on a HIFI system it would be worth checking on an older vcr, same the other direction. The data in the mono track is discrete from the stereo.
