Removing sesamoid bones: experiences & outcomes?

Hi everyone,

I’m new here and would love to hear about your experiences.

Back in 2019, I found out that the sesamoid bone in my right foot is fractured into two parts. I’ve been using orthotics since then, and overall it’s been manageable. I also have a bunion (hallux), which doesn’t help.

I’m very active and enjoy hiking and being outdoors. I do get pain, but it usually settles fairly quickly, so day-to-day life is okay. Still, I’d really like to be pain-free long term.

After a recent city trip where I walked around 30,000 steps a day, my foot is now swollen for the first time in years, and I’m not sure how it will progress.

Now I’m reconsidering surgery—possibly removing one or both sesamoid bones—but I’m worried about recovery and long-term outcomes.

So I’d really appreciate your input:

- Have you had sesamoid surgery?

- Did you remove one or both bones?

- How was recovery and the long-term result?

- Would you recommend surgery or sticking with conservative treatment?

Thanks a lot 🙏
