Fluid advice Nissan RE5R05A
RE5R05A (08 Titan) – Valvoline MaxLife vs OEM Matic S for heavy idle use?
Running a 2008 Nissan Titan with the RE5R05A. Truck sees a lot of idle time (3–4 hours daily for work), plus normal driving.
I know Nissan calls for Matic J/S (now basically Matic S), and I understand the friction characteristics are tuned specifically for that fluid.
My question is more from a builder/rebuilder perspective:
Have you guys seen any measurable difference in wear, clutch life, or valve body behavior running something like Valvoline MaxLife (which claims Matic S compatibility) vs OEM/Idemitsu Type S over the long term?
Not worried about cost—more interested in longevity and heat stability under extended idle conditions.
Would you:
1. Stick strictly OEM fluid
2. Run MaxLife and shorten service intervals
3. Or is there a better fluid option you’ve seen perform well in these units?
Appreciate any real-world teardown observations or failure patterns.
