When dealing with split lithops, it is important to understand the ideal approach for managing the old, dry leaves. This message aims to provide guidance on whether or not to remove these leaves, and the recommended method for doing so without disturbing the plant's root system.

1. Retaining Old Dry Leaves: Once a lithops has completed its splitting process, it is not necessary to remove the old, dry leaves. These leaves will naturally wither and dry out over time, contributing to the overall aesthetics of the plant. Leaving them intact is perfectly acceptable.

2. Optional Removal: If desired, you may choose to remove the old, dry leaves for aesthetic purposes or to promote better airflow around the plant. However, it is important to note that removing these leaves is not a requirement for the health and well-being of the lithops.

3. Avoid Disrupting the Roots: Regardless of whether you decide to remove the old leaves, it is crucial to avoid disturbing the lithops' delicate root system. Uprooting the plant to remove the leaves can cause unnecessary stress and potential damage. Therefore, it is recommended to use a gentler approach.

4. Using a Twister: To remove the old, dry leaves without uprooting the lithops, a twister tool can be employed. Gently insert the twister tool between the leaves and twist it to loosen the dried foliage. This method allows for the selective removal of old leaves without causing harm to the plant's roots or disturbing its overall structure.

Conclusion: When handling split lithops, the decision to remove or retain the old, dry leaves is a matter of personal preference. While it is not necessary to remove these leaves, using a twister tool offers a non-invasive way to selectively remove them without uprooting the plant. Remember to prioritize the plant's well-being and take precautions to ensure minimal disturbance to its root system during this process.
