What happens to the money in this game?

I started playing yesterday and have only explored three planets and progressed a little in the story.

I'm peacefully exploring an ocean or registering a new animal, and every few minutes, units appear out of nowhere.

I already have over a million, and I don't know how I got them. I have multiplayer enabled, but there's nobody else in the galaxy I'm in.
