Introduction to Heart Path (The True Ability of Love Gu)

***Origin***

The origin of heart path is human path!

Heart path is one of the 5 direct descendents of heart path representing the heart (unlike heaven path these direct descendents are much more straightforward)

Heart path is derived from the human path supreme profundity of cognition

With cognition consisting of the heart, mind, and spirit

This is one the paths forbidden by the Heavenly Dao!

Heart path is the most effective counter of all human path subsets and it represents the aspect of human path that is directly oppositional to Heaven

Chapter 399

If heavens had emotions it would grow old, the Great Dao is emotionless and impartial. Every living being has the chance to rise up, it depends on how one uses their opportunities, and how one fights!

This path is actually foreshadowed to be created by Red Lotus

With Red Lotus reviving as a heart path Venerable!

Chapter 1677

Duke Long then took a deep look at Hong Ting: “My disciple, you are a talented and intelligent child, a good child, but I worry because you emphasize on feelings too much. You already have rank five cultivation now, among the paths to ascend to an immortal, you will probably choose wisdom path, right?

“Master, your vision is unparalleled, I indeed have such thoughts, I feel like wisdom path is extremely suitable for me.” Hong Ting said truthfully.

Duke Long shook his head: “Wisdom path focuses on thought, will, and emotion. You emphasize on feelings too much so studying emotions has more demerits than benefits to you. Listen to master, choose time path. When you can view the past and present, observe the rise and decline of history, all sorts of honor and disgrace, you will understand that all feelings and romance will be cleansed by time. I have received revelation from fate Gu, time path suits you the most.”

After all, we see that Red Lotus wants to cultivate wisdom path with a specific focus on feelings and emotions

Emotion path is a combination of wisdom path and heart path

Therefore, by focusing on feelings Red Lotus would eventually gain the foundation to create heart path

***Aspects***

The three aspects of heart path are emotions, convictions, attitude

Heart path is special because it shares an aspect with wisdom path!

This can occur when two paths are closely connected (two sides of the same coin)

Time path and space path actually share 2 aspects! (but it will be a while before I create those introductions)

The first aspect of heart path is emotion

As mentioned earlier, emotions are actually a wisdom path and heart path existence (with emotion path being a product of these two paths)

This can be seen in the Legends of Ren Zu because emotion path Gu worms can exist in the mind (like seen with pride Gu) but also the heart as well (like seen with hatred Gu)

Therefore it makes sense that this aspect is shared by both wisdom path and heart path

Explaining this aspect of heart path is a bit awkward considering I already made an introduction to wisdom path post

But basically, emotions are produced by the heart and as such support the growth and development of specific Gu worms

As mentioned earlier, emotion path Gu worms can exist in the both the heart and mind

But their effect actually differs based on their location!

This is best seen in pride Gu (an emotion path Gu worm)

Philosophically, pride has been a complex existence because it is viewed both positively and negatively

The reason for this is its location!

Simply put, pride in one's mind negative and limit one's perspective

But pride in one's heart is positive and can strengthen one's resolve!

Emotion path Gu worm are extremely special existences

They are created by a person's cognition and can be created through the experience of extreme emotions (like how Red Lotus obtained regret Gu)

They also have the ability to make a heart their home and alter that heart into an environment that best suits them

Chapter 2021

Myriad Gold Wondrous Essence urged: “Hatred Gu, why are you gnawing on my brother’s heart, please stop quickly.”

But hatred Gu said: “I won’t! I am building my home here, I am changing your brother’s heart into a heart of hatred.”

Additionally, emotions are transient existences and fade with the passage of time

This is actually shown in The Legends of Ren Zu!

Chapter 2294

The three of them inspected their inner heart, they saw that many accumulated emotions had been washed away earlier when they fell into the river.

This discovery made Ren Zu and the other two feel very happy.

Next, they continued to travel on the floating ice.

Whenever they encountered a bad situation and felt negative emotions, they would put their heart into the river water to wash it: ”These bad situations will pass eventually.”

Their negative emotions faded away with time.

Whenever they encountered a good situation and felt immersed in joy, they would put their heart into the river water to wash it: ”These good situations will pass eventually.”

Their positive emotions also weakened over time, preventing them from feeling indulgent.

Cognition Gu saw that the three of them were constantly washing their hearts, it could not help but remind them: ”Time has never healed the wounds of the heart, except that your hearts have grown old. The worst thing is not your body growing old but your hearts aging. Stop washing them.”

This is one of the reasons why Fate had Red Lotus cultivate time path because it eliminate emotions and ages the heart

But while emotions are transient they can be created by the heart

So as long as the heart exists the emotions can remain indefinitely

Kind of like how we are able to stay alive despite our cells constantly dying

Its because they are constantly being replaced by new cells with the same functionality!

But if the heart grows old or becomes damaged then this process ceases

This is how Red Lotus maintained his love for his wife despite the countless rebirths he went through (which took God knows how long)

The heart is the foundation of desire

If a person's heart is damaged it weakens their desire and even injures their will

With a person's will is weakened to a sufficient degree it can even destroy their humanity!

Turning them into a hollow shell...

The last difference between emotions in the mind and emotions in the heart is contradictions

The mind cannot handle contradictions

But hearts have no problem dealing with contradictions

People can hold two opposing emotions simultaneously in their heart

Chapter 1958

Wu Yong led his alliance once again, he was the first to charge out of Clear Jade Dripping Wind Tiny Bamboo Building and began to valiantly pave a way through battle. At this moment, he fully displayed the prestige and courage of Southern Border’s Wu clan!

His face was solemn and his eyes flickered with cold lights. The determination to destroy fate Gu had always been so intense and overwhelming!

In the past…

He stood in front of his mother Wu Du Xiu’s coffin, mourning in silence.

While he felt pain, he found there was a feeling of release and delight in the depths of his heart.

Wu Yong’s determination was firm and his gaze was cold, he revealed the heated emotions inside his heart!

“Therefore, be destroyed, fate Gu!”

“I will mourn for you just like I mourned for my mother.”

“Only with you gone can I, Wu Yong, have the freedom to chase after my ambition!”

Here we see that Wu Yong contains two contradictory feelings in his heart

He's sad his mother is dead but he's happy at the same time!

This is a contradiction that is rejected by wisdom path but accepted by heart path

After all, emotions are capable of overpowering reason

Chapter 574

“Wisdom path seeks the path of knowledge, it is split into ‘thought, ‘will’, and ’emotion’. Thought is the foundation, when a person thinks, thoughts are created. When many thoughts are gathered, will is formed. With many wills intertwined, emotions would form. Thoughts are like weeds, they can be easily created or destroyed, will can be everchanging, firm as steel, empty like vacuum, or fierce like fire… As for emotions, they are like water, a small stream when thin, but cannot be cut easily or steered by reason. When deep, they will be like the sea, having great control and power over oneself.”

Especially love

It's a spontaneous, unstoppable force that defies reason and logic!

This is why love is a type of Fate!

It can override reason and exist in opposition to established laws (I'll explain this more in the heart path supreme profundities)

The second aspect of heart path is conviction

Convictions are the rules of the hearts (they are heart path and rule path existence)

Convictions are the things that we know for a fact are true

It's the one thing we're sure of

The thing we can rely on in a world filled with uncertainty

Hearts produce emotions but they are also a source of convictions

Each heart is associated with a specific belief

And from that belief specific rules are derived

As stated before, convictions are heart path existences that have rule path profundities

Which causes each heart to be associated with a specific set of behaviors (rules)

For example, the heart of hope grants Ren Zu the belief (conviction) that there is always hope

And this causes him to perservere even in the most dire situations!

As we see there is a strong connection between belief and behavior (for obvious reasons)

In The Legends of Ren Zu, Ren Zu obtained different hearts with influence his emotions, behavior, and perception

The heart of loneliness made Ren Zu believe that it was wrong to be alone which caused him to seek out companionship

The heart of freedom made the feathermen believe they were free and caused them to act in a way that rejected having the will of others imposed on them

The heart of domination made the snowmen believe she was invincible and caused her to seek out more powerful beings to dominate

These are all heart path profundities (The Legends of Ren Zu contain a large amount of heart path profundities)

Conviction comes from the word convinced

It represents the things you are convinced of

As such, hearts make you reject certain ideas

Because Ren Zu had the heart of hope so he refused to believe there was no hope

The heart of freedom made the feathermen refuse the idea that they weren't free

The heart of domination made the snowmen refuse the idea that she could lose to the fire of love

It's not just what you believe, but also what you refuse to believe!

The last aspect of heart path is attitude

This is different from the attitude Gu displayed in RI

The attitude Gu depicted in RI is better named persona Gu

A persona is a strategic mask of identity in public, the public image of one's personality, the social role that one adopts, or simply a fictional character. It is also considered "an intermediary between the individual and the institution."

A persona is basically a mask: the way you want to be perceived by others

Since attitude Gu is a portrayed as a mask and can effect the perception of others, it's better called persona Gu than attitude Gu

Persona deals with the perception of others (wisdom path in nature)

Attitude deals with the way you perceive things (heart path in nature)

In that sense, attitude Gu would be a pair of glasses which determines the way you perceive information (like glass half empty vs glass half full)

Rose colored glasses is a term that refers to a positive attitude

Btw, the way you perceive yourself is identity (identity Gu would be a mirror)

Attitude controls the way you perceive things

The heart of hope causes you to view problems as temporary things that can be solved

It also makes you view your desires as things that will eventually come true

This eventually caused Ren Zu to become insane as his desires grew beyond what the world could provide (especially when he refined self Gu which revealed his true desires)

The heart of domination causes you to view everything has something to be dominated

The heart of hatred causes you to find something to hate in everything you perceive

In this way, all hearts is connected to a certain way of viewing the world

Emotion has wisdom path profundities while conviction has rule path profundities

Attitude has transformation path profundities

Attitude has the ability to transform the heart (it's a heart path and transformation existence)

Maintaining an attitude will cause you to develop the corresponding heart

All hearts can be defined in terms of the emotions, convictions, attitude associated with them

***Cultivation***

The three aspects of heart path cultivation are introspection, authenticity, perserverance

The first aspect of heart path cultivation is introspection

In psychology, the process of introspection relies on the observation of one's mental state, while in a spiritual context it may refer to the examination of one's soul. Introspection is closely related to human self-reflection and self-discovery and is contrasted with external observation.

Introspection is the examinations of one's thoughts and feelings

It's the exploration of one's heart

What's interesting is that introspection is the exploration of one's own heart

Therefore trying to understand the heart of others is closer to wisdom path (although heart path attainment definitely helps)

This is because you can only observe the information produced by their actions and are unable to observe their hearts directly

It's impossble to truly know another's heart

Introspection is the foundation of heart path cultivation

Because it's impossible to truly know another's heart, heart path comprehension primarily relies on the research and exploration of one's own heart

Introspection is closely related to self discovery

It allows us to understand our hearts which reveals our true nature

Heart is the seat of the Self

Understanding one's heart is understanding one's Self

Chapter 1671

“I have not finished speaking. Since the attitude of outsiders is not important, what is truly important in our lives?” Fang Yuan asked with a smile.

Xia Lin was stunned for the third time: “Master, forgive my ignorance…”

Fang Yuan pointed at Xia Lin and then pointed at himself: “It is us, ourselves. It is our truest feelings. Ask yourself, listen to the voice in the depths of your heart. What do you want to do, what kind of person you want to become, where do you want to go? You will obtain the answer in the depths of your heart.”

Introspection allows us to understand our deepest feelings which defines our true nature

And this allows for the second aspect of heart path cultivation

The second aspect of heart path cultivation is authenticity

Authenticity is the degree to which you think and act in accordance with your heart

it is the state of being true to one's own nature despite external pressures

Chapter 1671

“If you want to travel, then travel around the world. If you want to treat others well, then treat them properly. If you want to attempt flying, then collect money and resources to purchase and practice flying Gu worms.”

Fang Yuan pointed at the alley then at the street: “If you want to remain in the alley, you can stay. If you want to walk into the street and enjoy the event with others, then walk out. Don’t mistreat your own feelings because of their attitude. If you mistreat yourself frequently, then you will end up with regrets, you will constantly wear a mask to act as another person, you will no longer be yourself.”

Introspection allows us to understand our deepest feelings and the true nature of our hearts

Authenticity is about acting in accordance with those feelings and accepting one's own nature

As we see here, Fang Yuan constantly performs heart path cultivation (it's part of being a true person)

Chapter 1673

“He is too strong-minded and stubborn. He clearly only has rank three cultivation, how dare he? Unreasonable, unreasonable! A lunatic, a madman! He is too arrogant, he actually shows contempt for life and death!! Right… he does not even fear death, what would he not dare to do? All the wealth, beauties and status in the world might be useless when compared to his own true feelings! What else do I have to entice him?”

No, that was not exactly right. Frost Tide tribe’s leader believed Fang Yuan liked wealth, beauties, power and fame too, but he liked to live by his own feelings even more! That was his aspiration.

I struggle to survive in the mortal world, I came to life and I joined the world. I lived my own life, I lived according to my own feelings, even if the waves toss me up and down, sending me to the border of death, I will never grieve, lament, fear, or worry; I will savor these flavor thoroughly, I will still laugh crazily until the end.

I am true to my nature.

I am a true person

Fang Yuan has an insanely high heart path affinity (it's the path he has the highest affinity with)

Feng Jiu Ge also has an extremely high heart path affinity

Chapter 1388

Neither demonic nor righteous, there is only Feng Jiu Ge in this world.

To leave or to stay, I decide my own life and death.

Demonic path or righteous path, these two factions and identities could not restrain Feng Jiu Ge!

To leave or to stay, as far as Feng Jiu Ge was concerned, if he left, his heart would not be free, only by remaining would his heart be at ease.

His actions simply came from his inner heart.

I am always me.

I am Feng Jiu Ge.

For all eternity!

This is a perfect example of authenticity

Feng Jiu Ge followed his heart regardless of external circumstances!

And this also leads to the third aspect of heart path cultivation...

Perseverance!

Perseverance is the quality of continuing to pursue a goal despite difficulties, setbacks, or discouragement, characterized by sustained effort, steadfastness, and persistence.

It's the final aspect of heart path cultivation

Introspection requires you to understand the deepest feelings of your heart

Authenticity requires you to accept those feelings and behave accordingly

Perserverance requires you to continue doing so despite external circumstances

Perserverance relies on the heart

Chapter 2185

The longer they stood on the floating ice, the more these emotions accumulated.

As the floating ice continued to sink, the emotions they felt also changed. Some went from angry to happy, while others went from happy to depressed.

“I can’t endure this anymore, I feel horrible.” After persisting for a while, Ren Zu said while grasping his heart, “Let’s jump to that floating ice.”

The three jumped over, but shortly afterwards, Carefree Wisdom Heart said: “I cannot stand this situation, I am also feeling extremely down. I even want to die.”

Ren Zu’s group of three quickly changed to another floating ice.

No matter what truth they came upon, in reality, they could be endured by gritting one’s teeth. The most dreadful thing was the suffering of the heart.

If the heart could not endure it, the person would be unable to continue moving forward.

As we can perserverance depends on the heart

The suffering is the heart is the most dangerous thing

And if the hearts becomes damaged, then a person would be unable to continue moving forward (perservere)

This is connected to what's called heart realm

The higher your heart realm, the more you heart can endure the endless flood of strong emotions and the more you can perservere through difficulty

Chapter 2294

Cognition Gu saw that the three of them were constantly washing their hearts, it could not help but remind them: ”Time has never healed the wounds of the heart, except that your hearts have grown old. The worst thing is not your body growing old but your hearts aging. Stop washing them.”

Fang Yuan has the highest heart realm a person could achieve (it's his strongest trait)

Question: What tier is Fang Yuan’s personal talent (not counting assistance from wisdom Gu and true meaning from dream realm in elevating his attainment)? How does it compare with venerables and Dao Guardians?

Gu Zhenren: This is a matter of personal interpretation, and everyone will have a different answer to it. Fang Yuan’s strongest traits are not his talents but his outstanding stubbornness and perseverance.

Perserverance strengthens the heart and creates a stronger understanding of your inner heart and true self

After all, the more you truly believe in what you're doing, the more you're able to endure hardship!

Chapter 1673

“Correct, but there is still more. You talked of the dark side of politics and promised to gift me mermaid beauties, both have no importance to me. Let me put it this way so you might understand a little, I have lived long enough that I am already sick of wearing a mask to live. Death is not scary to me at all. Right now**, I only want to live using my truest emotions and feelings, I will achieve my goals in my own way.** Only by living like this can I feel the excitement of life and the desire towards living!"

Frost Tide tribe’s leader was dumbstruck and stupefied, he finally understood as he shouted: “So that’s it, you are a lunatic! You have said so much but they are nothing more than saying you have lived long enough and don’t want to live anymore! So be it you were a Gu Immortal, but you, a mere rank three Gu Master, want to live life your own way? You are dreaming!”

Fang Yuan smiled: “You think becoming a Gu Immortal can allow people to live according to their will? Live without wearing a mask? A place with people has society and conflict. Survival and living are two different things. The way you want to live does not have to depend on your strength and cultivation level, but your own heart.”

After a brief pause, Fang Yuan continued: “Actually, low strength is also quite interesting. When you live without a mask, low strength will allow you to face more difficulties and challenges of reality; surpass these difficulties, face these challenges, and life becomes much more wonderful.

As we see here, authenticity is connected to perserverance

Living without a mask means to live in accordance with your own will

Instead of the will of others (or the will of the world)

This means that one faces more conflict with the will of others (and the will of the world as well)

Authenticity increases the hardships in one's life

And increases the need of perserverance

Which in turn strengthens the heart

And aligns your various hearts with the nature of your Self

This is heart path cultivation!

***Essence***

The essence of heart path is judgement

Judgement is the evaluation of given circumstances to make a decision or form an opinion.

Hearts gives us the ability to make decisions

Even wills have hearts (Mo Yao's will contained her love towards Bo Qing and desire to be with him)

Hearts cause us to form judgements on the myriad things we experience

Chapter 2185

Every piece of floating ice in the River of Time was a piece of truth.

Ren Zu observed for a long while before pointing towards a floating ice: “This floating ice is neither big nor small and has a smooth surface, let’s step on this.”

But Great Strength True Martial said: “This floating ice is clearly too small, it is not enough for us three.”

Carefree Wisdom Heart shook her head: “This floating ice is quite big but there are many spikes on it, they will pierce our feet.”

Even when looking at the same truth, from the perspectives of different people, they could be big or small, minor or severe, difficult or easy. Some could accept it, but some could not.

Ren Zu’s group discussed for a long while before they chose a floating ice and stepped on it.

When Ren Zu stepped on this ice, he immediately cried and sniveled; Great Strength True Martial shouted in anger, while Carefree Wisdom Heart laughed happily.

When looking at the same truth, different people would have different feelings and emotions regarding it.

Ren Zu and his children could only endure this.

“Every piece of floating ice in the River of Time is a cold and silent truth. But we humans have hearts, we feel emotions when we come across truths, and when truths and emotions mix, they create different situations[1] for everyone.” Carefree Wisdom Heart recalled the knowledge in her mind.

These judgements produce corresponding emotions, convictions, attitudes

Another word for this would be perspective

Hearts determine the perspective from which we view the world from

People with different hearts will form different judgements of the same truth (like the heart of hope vs the heart of despair)

Furthermore, a person can have multiple hearts

We see this in the Legends of Ren Zu

Each heart represents a different perspective (with a corresponding emotion, conviction, attitude)

For example Wu Yong had conflicting perspective about his mothers death

These are essentially two different hearts that compose Wu Yong total perspective

It's kind of like how a killer move is composed of several Gu worms

In that sense a person's heart is actually a combination of smaller hearts

A person's heart is basically a killer move!

This is related to the multifarious nature of humans

There are different sides of a person

And you can't see all the sides from a single perspective

Each side reveals itself under specific circumstances

There's even a side to a person that they consciously reject about themselves

This is called the shadow self

Like how Tai Bai Yun Sheng was surprised at his decision to abandon his comrades to save himself

We even see this with how Ren Zu's self Gu acts against his conscious desire to save his daughter in order to act on his stronger unconscious desire to save himself

Chapter 807

Boundless Forest Samsara cried, she held onto Ren Zu’s hands as she pleaded: “Father, don’t abandon me. I cannot climb trees, if you go, I will be left here alone, I do not know how to plant trees, there are limited fruits, one day, I will die of hunger.”

Ren Zu said: “Why would I abandon you? You are my daughter, I will carry you and leave this place.”

Thus, the father and daughter climbed the tree.

The higher they went, the more exhausted Ren Zu felt. Boundless Forest Samsara was a heavy burden, even without her, climbing the tree alone was very dangerous, not to mention carrying a person who could not climb the tree at all.

The bigger problem was, the tree started wavering and making cracking noises.

Cognition Gu told Ren Zu: “Oh no, Ren Zu, you are carrying your daughter, it is impossible to get out of ordinary abyss. This is your accomplishment tree, it cannot help others become extraordinary, even your daughter is no exception.”

Ren Zu shook his head: “I do not want to give up.”

Hope Gu also urged him: “Put her down, otherwise, you cannot leave this place. Even though you have the hearts of loneliness and discontent, after planting so many trees, your heart blood is already dry. This is your last hope! Look, the tree is about to collapse!”

Ren Zu waved his hand: “I still want to try.”

Self Gu saw that Ren Zu was stubborn from his actions, and seeing that the other Gu worms failed to convince him, it flew out.

“Ah, this is killing me!” Self Gu did not discuss with Ren Zu, it bit on Boundless Forest Samsara’s hand.

After all, self Gu represents a person's true self

Not just the parts of themselves that they've consciously accepted (this is called the ego)

The multifarious nature of humanity is the essence of the human path killer move myriad self

And this multifarious nature is represented by several hearts that compose the human heart

But I'll explain this in more detail in the introduction to human path

When heart path Dao marks gather in large numbers, they create judgements which can influence the heart (producing emotions, convictions, attitudes)

The more heart path Dao marks a person has, the clearer their judgement and the better undestanding they have of their own desires

Finally since hearts create judgements, one's heart is the foundation for making decisions!

***Supreme Profundities***

The three supreme profundities of heart path are actually similar to the three aspects of wisdom path

The first two supreme profundities of wisdom path is self and others (dealing with the manipulation of one's own mind and the manipulation of the minds of others)

The first two supreme profundities of heart path is also self and others (dealing with the manipulation of one's own heart and the manipulation of the hearts of others)

Heart path and wisdom path really have an extremely strong overlap!

The last supreme profundity of heart path is...

Transcendence!

Specifically, I'm talking about the act of surpassing one's limits

This supreme profundity of heart path is connected to the effect love Gu!

It's the reason why it's a type of Fate (and why it can damage Fate Gu)

Love is an emotion path Gu worm

It is both wisdom path and heart path

Love is the true nature of the heart

The transcendence supreme profundity of heart path allows one to be free from the constraints of the material world

This shows a strong relationship between love and freedom

Love in it's purest form is freedom

It allows things to be as they are

To bloom and wither...

Specifically, this is a type of love called detachment

This type of love sets things free and allows them to operate under their own will

If you love something, set it free

If it comes back to it's yours

If it doesn't, then it never belonged to you in the first place

There are many different types of love like domination, protection, sacrifice etc.

The Legends of Ren Zu depicts the strong relationship between love and freedom

Chapter 1230

Thus, these feathermen flew up together, shining worms were flying out of their bodies, they were wild freedom Gu.

The freedom Gu fused together into a gigantic freedom Gu.

This freedom Gu easily took away Ren Zu’s love Gu.

“Henceforth, love is free.” This giant freedom Gu said.

Ren Zu’s self Gu quickly flew out, it wanted to snatch love Gu, but it could not overpower freedom Gu, it only managed to take a bite of love Gu.

Self Gu said angrily: “Love, also belongs to oneself!”

Honestly, this creates so many questions?

What was that giant freedom Gu?
