Abdominal Binder Not Recommended?

Post-Op

I had my pre-op appointment with the surgeon’s nurse yesterday. In that call when I asked if I would be given an abdominal binder to use after surgery she said that they don’t recommend it. That they sort of see it as a crutch and that it actually ends up weakening the abdominal muscles. I asked about using it for a few days post-surgery while I’m acutely healing and she said they still don’t recommend it.

I’ve seen many people across groups say this was a pain saver for them. When I get discharged I have an hour long drive + to get into my apartment I have over a flight of stairs to walk up. I’m in bad shape mobility wise and walking up these stairs on a good day I struggle and sometimes have to take breaks. The nurse “assured me” I’d be fine and wouldn’t need a binder or possibly even stronger pain meds.

Am I being unreasonable here with my worries? In particular I’m worried that my pain will be too bad to get home or get into my apartment. And I’m also worried that if I go buy one myself a binder and bring it with me to the hospital to use they’ll make it a huge deal. Am I wrong?
