Ready for first time? How do you know?

My wife and I believe we are ready for our first experience.  We’ve been fantasizing about this for almost two years. How do you actually know when you’re ready? Any recommendations?  We’ve talked about starting with a soft swap and see how we feel about it.  We also fantasize exploring MFM (no MM interaction/body contact).  Any suggestions/recommendations?
