Shallow Terracotta Practicality

I have a 7"" across Golden Ball Cactus. It was in a pop that was about the same size. I understand these things like to be rootbound and it was.

Id like to put it in a 8" shallow pot to keep in the same size but am wondering how practical it is and whether the pot can hold the plant. I saw an example of this on the net and have added the pic below. I think it looks awesome.
