Nokia Builds 6G as an AI Native Network

What makes 6G different from previous generations of mobile technology? In this conversation with Ari Kynäslahti - SVP and Mobile Networks CTO, Mobile Infrastructure, Nokia - he outlines how 6G is being designed as an AI native network from day one. Unlike earlier generations where AI was layered on top for optimization, 6G will embed AI deep into the architecture, from Layer 1 scheduling to energy efficiency, spectrum management and performance control. The goal is to create a network built to handle exponential AI-driven traffic, including machine-to-machine communication, autonomous systems and real-time inferencing across mobile networks.
Nokia has already conducted more than 20 spectrum trials in preparation for 6G, focusing on frequencies between 6.4 and 8.4 GHz, roughly double the widely deployed 3.5 GHz 5G band. The ambition is to deliver higher performance while enabling deployment alongside existing 5G infrastructure.
Beyond technical gains, 6G also opens new monetization and ecosystem opportunities through open interfaces that allow third-party AI applications to run across the network. As AI usage accelerates and traffic patterns shift from human-driven to machine-driven communication, Nokia positions 6G as foundational infrastructure for the next global AI supercycle.
