Will Marcus come back from rehab resentful or grateful Max told their parents?

discussion

I’ve been thinking about how Marcus might return from rehab, and I feel like the key question is whether he’s resentful or grateful toward Max for telling their parents. But more than that, I think his reaction is going to tell us if he’s actually ready to be in recovery.

If he comes back resentful, it probably means he’s still resisting the process. That kind of anger usually points to feeling controlled rather than supported, which doesn’t exactly line up with someone who’s ready to do the internal work. In that case, I’d expect a slower arc, maybe compliance on the surface, but not real emotional progress, and possibly even a relapse storyline.

But if he comes back grateful, I think that’s huge. Gratitude would suggest he’s had a genuine shift in perspective, that he can recognize Max’s choice as something that ultimately helped him, even if it hurt. And to me, that kind of reframing is a sign that he might finally be ready to fully engage in recovery, not just go through the motions.

That’s where I could really see an “amends” conversation coming in. Not in a rushed or perfect way, but something honest, Marcus taking accountability, Max expressing how scared she was, and both of them meeting somewhere in the middle. That kind of scene would feel like a turning point, not just for their relationship but for Marcus as a character.

I also just really hope the show gives us a season where Marcus is improving, not just spiraling. He’s been on such a downward trajectory that it would feel meaningful (and honestly refreshing) to see what it looks like when he starts choosing recovery for himself.
