Hey all, looking to get some real-world insight from folks who work hands-on with bus duct / busway systems in data center environments (techs, electricians, engineers, commissioning folks, GC/EC teams, etc.).

I’ve been around MV/LV distribution and commissioning, but I’m trying to better understand how different teams approach bus duct installation, inspection, and energization specifically in data center builds.

A few things I’m curious about:

\*\*Installation & Physical Design\*\*

• What does a “good” install look like in your experience?

• Common failure points you see (alignment, joint torqueing, insulation damage, expansion joints, supports, etc.)

• How much variability is there between vendors (Eaton, Siemens, Schneider, Starline, etc.) in install practices?

• Any lessons learned with long runs, vertical risers, or high ampacity systems?

\*\*Inspection & QA/QC\*\*

• What are you checking before turnover?

• Typical inspection checklists (visual, mechanical, IR windows, joint verification, labeling, etc.)

• How are joints verified — torque wrench logs, witness marks, thermal scans later, etc.?

• What usually gets missed that later causes issues?

\*\*Pre-Energization Readiness\*\*

• What tells you “this is ready to energize”?

• Insulation resistance / megger practices for bus duct — what voltages and thresholds are you using?

• Do you perform hi-pot or rely on factory testing?

• Coordination with upstream/downstream equipment (switchgear, transformers, PDUs, etc.)

\*\*Energization Process\*\*

• Step-by-step — how does your team typically energize a new bus duct system?

• Who is involved (commissioning agent, EC, owner, OEM rep)?

• Any specific hold points or sign-offs before throwing it live?

• Lessons learned or near-misses during energization?

I’m especially interested in real field experiences, things that went wrong, and what you now always double-check because of it.

Appreciate any insight, trying to improve my understanding beyond just specs and drawings.
