Cthulhu by Torchlight Hero Subclass

D&D 5e Revised/2024

Hello Folks,

Wanted to get some input interpreting the rules here for the Hero Subclass ability Bolstering Performance.

It reads like so:

At the start of your turn, you can bolster your allies (no action required). Creatures of your choice within 30 feet of you that can see or hear you regain a number of Hit Points equal to 2d6 plus half your Fighter level (rounded down). You can’t use this feature if you have the Incapacitated condition.

And the improved version:

When you use your Bolstering Presence feature, each of the chosen creatures gains a bonus to D20 Tests and damage rolls equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of +1) until the end of your next turn.

Is this ability only intended to target allies? The first sentence “you can bolster your allies” seems to imply that it should, but the later half “Creatures of your choice” implies that anyone can be targeted even the character applying the effect.

I was mainly wondering if anyone knew any abilities that function similarly that would help explain this inconsistency in the writing. I know usually abilities intended for allies make it clear they only impact allies, and in cases like Inspiring Leader it makes it clear it can impact the character applying the effect as well.

Thanks!
