(Spoilers Extended) Maegor the Cruel was an avatar of the Warrior.
Probably my biggest "hear me out" theory.
Maegor was always a skilled fighter, but his greatest feat was undoubtedly rising as the sole survivor in his Trial of Seven - against the Warrior's Sons, no less.
The sole purpose of a Trial of Seven is to invoke the judgment of the gods better than a normal trial. The Faith Militant interpreted Maegor's victory as a blessing from the Seven themselves, but even more noteworthy is the fact that when Maegor came out of his coma, he was more vicious and bloodthirsty than ever before. This was almost certainly due to a TBI, but doesn't it also remind us of another character?
Who else:
- suffered a traumatic near-death experience
- spent a length of time unconscious
- awoke with a drastic personality change
- and is widely theorized to have been touched by a god?
That's right: *Patchface.*
If Patchface's "death" and rebirth in the sea was an anointing from the Drowned God, then Maegor's rebirth after his Trial of Seven may well have been an anointing from the Seven themselves. More specifically, he was anointed by the member of the Seven who presides over all things martial: the Warrior.
The Warrior's Sons sought to honor their "father" by defeating a heretic, and they lost. By rights, Maegor may very well have won the god's favor. This would also explain his warlike bent after his awakening.
But *why* would the Warrior bless a heretic? Why would he choose an enemy of his devout as a champion?
The simplest explanation is that he was shamed by the Faith Militant's failure, and he wanted them to become stronger by giving them a worthy opponent. Or perhaps it was to test their devotion. This coincides with the Faith's philosophy of might making right, as evidenced by the existence of a Trial of Seven in the first place.
I'm only half-serious here, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if George confirmed it for the irony.
TL;DR: After winning the Trial of Seven, Maegor was blessed by the Warrior in order to give the Faith Militant a worthy foe to test them.
