Multiple mining pits?

I've read here that you can put 2 to 4 and possibly more mining pits on a resource node. Anyone with experience? Pros? Cons? Tips? Any info appreciated. The info I've found is outdated. Only thing I've read is multiple mining pits are possible and that having more than two increases mine collapse rate.
