The truth about 2026 OSAP changes. Who is going to find the colleges? The government? Or students?

Hey everyone, you might have seen the headlines about the Ontario government "investing" a massive $6.4 billion back into colleges and universities to keep them stable. While the college is celebrating this as a "game-changer," there is a huge catch that specifically affects our OSAP.

  1. Where is the $6.4 Billion actually coming from?

The government says this is new money, but researchers from the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA)found that 69% of this new funding is effectively being paid for by cutting our OSAP grants.

Basically, the province is taking money that used to be a "grant" (free money) and turning it into a "loan" (money you pay back with interest). They aren't spending more overall; they are just shifting the bill from the provincial treasury onto our personal debt.

  1. The Great OSAP Flip (Fall 2026)

Starting in Fall 2026, the OSAP formula is being completely reversed:

  • Old Way: You could get up to 85% of your aid as a grant.
  • New Way: Grants are now capped at a maximum of 25%.
  • The Result: If you used to get a $10,000 package with $8,500 in grants, that same package will now be $7,500 in loans and only $2,500 in grants.
  1. Double-Hitting the Budget

On top of the grant cuts, the government also ended the 7-year tuition freeze.

  • Colleges like Georgian can now raise tuition by 2% every year.
  • While the government claims this only adds "cents per day," it compounds over a 3 or 4-year degree alongside your much larger loan balance.
  1. The Interest Trap

Remember: While the Federal (Canada) part of your loan is interest-free, the Ontario part is NOT. It starts building interest the moment you finish your last exam. Because our loans are now 3x to 5x larger than they used to be, that interest is going to be way more expensive.

TLDR: The government is "saving" the college system by turning student aid into student debt. We are essentially bailing out the institutions ourselves.
