After my car got broken into twice, I finally caved and installed a wired PoE system. 6 months in—here's what I wish I knew before buying-----it is one story from my good friend Lara

Two break-ins in six months. The first time, my Ring doorbell caught a blurry hoodie. The second time, the battery had died three days earlier and I never got the notification.

That second one stung. I had a camera. It was right there. And it did absolutely nothing.

So I went down the rabbit hole. r/homedefense, YouTube install videos, the works. I'm not a tech guy—I'm an accountant. I can barely set up a new printer. But I was motivated.

Ended up going with a wired PoE system (four cameras + NVR box). Ran the cables through the attic on a Saturday. Took me 8 hours, two trips to Home Depot, and a lot of swear words.

Six months later, here's my honest review as a normal person, not a security expert:

The Good:

  • It just works. No batteries. No "your camera is offline" notifications. No lag when I open the app. I didn't realize how much mental energy I was spending worrying about whether my old cameras were actually recording. Now I don't think about it at all.
  • I can actually see faces at night. My old camera at 3am: grainy ghost figure. This one: I can tell you the brand of sneakers the guy is wearing. The night vision is crisp. I didn't know it could be this good.
  • No monthly fee. I already pay for Netflix, Spotify, Disney+, Hulu, and probably something else I forgot. Adding another $10/month to watch my own driveway felt insulting. The NVR just records to a hard drive. Done.

The Bad:

  • Running cable sucks. There's no way around it. If you don't have attic access or you rent, this is a legit barrier. It's the price of reliability.
  • The app isn't as pretty as Ring. Ring's app feels like it was designed by Apple. This one feels like it was designed by engineers. Functional, not flashy. I got used to it in a week.
  • I now know too much about my neighbors' cats. The AI human detection is good, but I still get a notification every time Mr. Whiskers patrols the fence line at 4am. Need to dial in the motion zones better.

The Verdict:
If you're on the fence between "easy wireless" and "reliable wired"—if you actually need the footage when something happens—go wired. The peace of mind is worth the Saturday of cable pulling.

Happy to answer questions about the install process or share pics of the night vision quality. Not trying to sell anything, just wish someone had told me this stuff before I wasted money on battery cams.
