How do I survive toxic team?

Hi everyone,

I graduated from college and started working last summer, and my team has been extremely toxic. Since joining, I’ve gone through the following:

  1. Micromanaging manager – My manager constantly asked for updates multiple times a day. No matter what I delivered or how I explained things, he wouldn’t understand (or pretended not to), and would accuse me of doing nothing. He would also misrepresent my work to upper management.
  2. Harassing coworker – One coworker would randomly stand behind me without saying anything, like a ghost, which was honestly disturbing. I told them multiple times, seriously, to stop bothering me, but it didn’t help.
  3. Another random coworker from a different team – Someone I didn’t even know would come over frequently just to pick on me. It only stopped after I firmly told her to leave me alone.

I endured the first two for about 4 months, and both of them were eventually laid off (not because the company cared about what I was going through, just coincidence during layoffs). The third person’s team got moved to another building.

  1. After that, I was assigned to work on a project with another teammate. I was the designer and main person responsible for the project, while they were assigned to assist. During the process, they kept trying to take credit and make the project look like it was theirs. I pushed back and defended my work. The project is now finished, but somehow in my new manager’s eyes, I’ve become the one “holding things back.” Since this project, the PM and that teammate have been subtly influencing the manager to believe I’m underperforming.

5    Now the manager has also started targeting me. I get criticized almost every day. Explaining doesn’t help—it’s like talking to someone who refuses to listen. For example:

  • He questions why I’m slow when I’ve already finished tasks ahead of time.
  • He asks why I didn’t do tasks that were never assigned to me.
  • In daily standups, he calls me out in front of everyone, and the PM backs him up or even prompts him to criticize me.

All of this has been happening one thing after another since I joined, nonstop. I don’t see any future in this job anymore.

The problem is my H1B doesn’t take effect until October, so I can’t easily switch jobs. Internal transfer is also very difficult since there are no openings in my city.

In less than a year since I joined, 8 people have already transferred or left. I’m still stuck here. I don’t even know if I’ll be able to find something after my H1B kicks in.

Lately, I feel constant anxiety and even physical disgust going to work. I also regret not leaving when I had the chance earlier.

My question is:

For those who’ve been in similar situations, how did you endure it? Or how do you mentally numb yourself just to get through each day? Right now, going to work feels almost unbearable.
