Looking for the best way to chase an electric wire through joists in a loft.

I'm adding lights to the bathroom in our cabin, which is a park model trailer. The ceiling is also the floor of our loft which is where our two kids sleep and hang out. My dilemma is the framing for the loft is 2x4 joists. Would it be better to drill a 3/4 inch hole in the middle of the joists, close to one end, or to notch a half inch close to the end and then cover with nail plates? I would have to go through 2 of them?
