I (19M🏳️‍⚧️) think I fucked up with an online friend (19a)

Sorry for the book, I just need help. minimal editing. I just got done crying.

I've been playing dnd with this awesome group of people for a few months now. One of these ppl (I'll call it Mimi[agender]), is Brazilian, which I just discovered bc of a file name of an animation they sent that had to download to watch. I noticed the title was in a different language and pointed it out, to which Mimi responded that it was Portuguese. They sent a screenshot of their IPad with had the language set to Portuguese with the message attached "tw jumpscare" to which *I* responded "AHG SPANISH" to play along with the whole "jumpscare thing" Mimi responded by asking if I was stupid, to which I responded with "ye".

Now, I think this is where I might be an ass, and I feel like shit for this.

Mimi replied to her previous message saying the language was Portuguese and that Mimi itself was Brazilian. I, in my mind, use the word "Spanish" as a blanket term for Hispanic stuff. Nobody has corrected me for it before, so I was using the word "Spanish" as an umbrella term.

I tried to kinda joke around with a few of the words I could recognize from Mimi's screenshot, sending "I think biblioteca is library or smth" to which Mimi replied "Oh wow really 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 i didnt know that 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭" Next, I responded with "bruh i barely survived spanish II dont come after me 🙁" and all I got in response was a "😐"

Mimi then started texting in Portuguese, which I didnt even bother to translate the first one bc it contained the word "gringo", which I knew to be an insult, so I responded "HEY I KNOW GRINGO IS MEAN" "DONT" like- I was jokingly upset. I dont know if Mimi thought I was genuinely upset??

I translated Mimi's text "HEY UR SO RUDE"

AGAIN jokingly upset. I dont know if I came across genuinely upset. Mimi THEN sent another Portuguese text, which I looked away to translate the phrase "how dare you call yourself Spanish" was in there, so I typed "IM NOT SPANISH", but when I looked up, Mimi said that it felt racist!

I panicked and sent a screenshot of what I translated to the chat, but I legit just didnt know what to do. I DM'd Mimi privately to apologize, but it hasn't responded and its been over two hours now. I've cried twice since the whole interaction bc I really didnt want to hurt them. I don't wanna ruin dnd for the group bc I was ignorant or an idiot.

Am I an ass for this? I'm just so confused and anxious, please help
