I’m pregnant and about to lose my dad and I don’t know how to handle this
I don’t really know where else to put this, and I feel really alone in what I’m going through right now. I’m 32 and none of my close friends or family have lost a parent, so I don’t have anyone in my personal life who really understands this, and I think I just need to get it out somewhere and maybe connect with people who do.
About 4 and a half years ago, my dad was diagnosed with cancer. Around that same time, I had just moved out of province, so everything felt complicated right from the beginning.
Since then, it’s been a long and exhausting journey. For months at a time, I would travel back and forth between provinces to support him during treatment. I’m an only child and my mom has a physical disability, so a lot of the responsibility naturally fell on me.
He was initially diagnosed with lymphoma, which later turned into leukemia. Over the past few years, it’s been one thing after another. Recently, he’s been battling infection after infection, and now we’ve been told he likely only has a few weeks left due to a severe lung infection.
At the same time, life hasn’t stopped. I’ve been building businesses, got married, and I’m now three months pregnant. I’ve spent so much time with my dad over these years, almost daily at certain points, trying to be there for him as much as I could.
Right now I feel really conflicted. Part of me feels like I’ve been anticipating this for a long time, like I’ve been bracing for it for years. But now that it’s actually here, I feel completely heartbroken and overwhelmed.
I don’t really know what I’m looking for by posting this. I think I just don’t want to feel so alone right now. If anyone has any words, perspective, or has gone through anything that felt even remotely similar, I would really appreciate hearing from you.
