How did James' Voice Box survive Kill Em All?

Don't get me wrong, I like the sounds of it but as a singer myself, that kinda singing does NASTY stuff to your body. Just look at Hit the Lights, his screaming is very extreme. Compared to death metal vocal techniques, that is wayy better for your throat.
