Neighbor advice

Our neighbors n us paid someone to resurface the shared rd & 1 day after that was done someone dropped off my new colt and messed up "their side" of the gravel and scuffed it leading to pot holes. (this person has become unreachable) We paid someone to fix the holes but now our neighbors want the whole road resurfaced for 1,800. and committed to the contractor coming today to do it. my husband is unemployed and I am a part time teacher and new mom and our money is tight right now. I tried explaining that we can't afford this right now and that we already paid for a fix but it wasn't satisfactory for them and now they want us on the hook for something we can't pay.

I really need perspective. I want a good relationship with my neighbors but I don't think they will be happy without us paying.
